The Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg is the second largest city in Germany, the seventh largest in the European Union
and the largest city in the European Union not to be a capital city. The city of Hamburg is the centre of the European
metropolitan administrative area of Hamburg. The metropolitan area of Hamburg has some 4.3 million inhabitants. 1.75
million of these live within the confines of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg.
Location
Hamburg lies in Northern Germany, some 100 km from the North Sea and 70 km from the Baltic Sea. The economy of Hamburg
makes it one of the most important industrial centres in Germany. Hamburg possesses a high degree of purchasing power.
The area boasts heavy-weight companies (Airbus, Lufthansa, Blohm and Voss, importance hospitals, chemical groups,
trading companies, automotive companies, insurance and media businesses).
Because of its harbour, Hamburg has been given the sobriquet “Gateway to the World”. The harbour is the largest seaport in Germany and the second largest in Europe after Rotterdam, and the eighth largest in the world.
Hamburg is an important centre for trade fairs and exhibitions and is one of the leading exhibition centres in the world. Hamburg also features a large number of institutions, public offices and educational and research centres.
Aside from its business significance, Hamburg also has a great variety of cultural activities on offer.
